The House Guest
I made room for the New Year today, to make it comfortable for its stay.
I cleaned the fridge for future meals that will keep us full,
food that will fuel the memories too.
I watered the plants for growth,
placed all my worries and kitchen scraps in the trash to fill it up again in the morning
set up the coffee machine, so we can have something in our brains that’s functional.
I lit candles for future conversations, even though matches make me nervous, especially after the sparkler accident in 2003.
I changed the bedding to make room for future dreams,
fluffed the pillows to shake out any crumbs of insomniatic festering.
I did everything I could,
so be gentle with me, New Year.
I am not taking Ibuprofen for my health,
if age was a currency, I am starting to turn a profit,
so make me rich instead of doubtful that I am doing the right thing,
I am doing everything to make your comfortable,
can you do the same thing for me?
