Today, we celebrate the birthday of a simple house cat, who has made a huge impact on my husband and I since we adopted him. Our cat, Gus, turns 13 years old today and even though we have only had him a small portion of his life (3 years), we have bettered our lives for having him. He is the best cat. He cuddles with us, and even fusses when we do not lay down with him (a good burnout reducer). He guards us selflessly in the bathroom and patrols our patio while I work on my plants. He also, in my case, serves as a great companion when writing. If you are struggling with writer's block, employ your pet to hang out with you while you hammer out a project. They are like little muse, setting a relaxed tone to your work as they sunbathe beside you. They can also be the perfect inspiration to get your project done in order to truly enjoy their company.
Below, I have compiled nine poems that I have completed over the past three years of having Gus in my company.
Bond
To know peace, is to know a long lost friend.
Tempest
Let us
dance
play
romp
like thunder and lightning in their courtyard of gray days.
Sirius XM
As if turning off the car radio,
she hushed the voices in her head to get to her final destination

A woman's best friend is Karma.
How to find a Daydreamer
Look for any window with a great view,
where Time wanders,
the Mind will follow suit.
Note on the ribcage says: Closed
The heart can only do so much.
Weeds
I wish green thumbs could heal bones too.
catbird
They named me-
I kid you not -
I swear to Pete,
which would be a better
then the fact that my name is Catbird.
Yup.
Cat.
Bird.
A myth, no legend.
A question,
the only answer
received between the lull of dinner is that I am a classic
but not traditional,
like the Beatles.
I was born backwards mid-conversation with some body
before entering this realm
while the moon was eclipsing,
dark side ignited
by eyes glossing over
my name card, unsure if they were developing some type of combustive cataracts
or if my name is in fact
Catbird.
It is a rarity for sure but -Catbird?
Not Selena or Artemis huntress of the night, the twin to normalcy?
No, C-a-tb-i-r-d.
Isn't that absurd? A cat mixed with a bird?
…I guess there was a dog mingled with a cat,
we can thank Nickelodeon for that
You also have the option to call me Cat or Birdie,
so no,
I won't change it.
Excuse me, but number 6,043 needs to leave,
this title was entrusted to me,
a dream veiled over my possibility, some would call it absurdity,
but it another alias it is known as
me.
Apollo's Chariot Race
I race the Sun home to kiss you first.
Thank you for reading this post, and in the comments, please feel free to say which poem was your favorite. I will thank Gus for you personally, he is the editor after all. Below is proof of him at work, taking a break in the sunset.
