Bearing Her
An essay from the Owner
To friends and family reading this, don’t worry, I have not had the baby yet!
I just felt philosophical, reflective, and poetic about the impending arrival of my little girl, and wanted to share my thoughts on Substack.
We have finally landed on the month I will be giving birth, and I have thought of that phrase a lot lately, “giving birth.”
I looked it up, and it came from the Middle Ages, derived from the verb “bear” and meaning to “bring forth.”
I bore this baby for 259 days. I have carried her with me, cradled her in my body, in the crux of my hips, protected by walls of fat and muscle, and have felt her kicks ripple under my skin like an echo.
I am observing life from the beginning. I crafted a body, a vessel made from my husband and my own, a form that will be observed by the world by giving birth to her.
I cannot wait to see her.
